Acid reflux disease
Acid reflux disease, or just "acid reflux", occurs when stomach acid comes up into the oesophagus - the word "reflux" simply means "flowing back". In a healthy person, the sphincter between the oesophagus and the stomach stops acid from passing, but in patients with acid reflux the sphincter is not tight enough and acid can get through.
Acid reflux disease is also known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in the USA or Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) in the UK.
People who suffer from acid reflux can also suffer from oesophagitis, or inflammation of the lining of the oesophagus caused by the acid. Some people are more sensitive to this acid than others.
There are a number of different causes or trigger for acid reflux. The best-known trigger, and perhaps the most common, is eating a large meal. This can trigger acid reflux because the pressure of the stomach forces acid out through the sphincter. Acid can also be forced out due to pressure from a pregnancy, or if a patient is lying down or bending.
Mild acid reflux is very common, with as many as 10% of adults suffering from it at least once a day. However, moderate or severe cases of acid reflux can cause ongoing and painful symptoms, and can be bad enough to cause significant distress.
Diagnosis of acid reflux disease
A doctor will usually diagnose acid reflux just from hearing about your symptoms, and tests are not generally necessary. You may be asked to undergo tests if your symptoms are severe or if you do not respond to the given treatment.

"An estimated 15 million Americans suffer from heartburn every day, but not everyone will need "the purple pill" (Nexium) or another Proton-Pump Inhibitor (PPI) drug to treat it."
"Nexium, one of the most widely-prescribed PPIs is also the most expensive at $240 per month (the cash price you would pay if your insurance did not cover it). Not surprisingly, Nexium was also a top-selling drug in 2008 at a whooping $4.8 billion."
