Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid Reflux Symptoms

Here is a rundown of the most common symptoms of acid reflux.

Heartburn

Heartburn is the main symptom of acid reflux disease. Heartburn is felt as a burning discomfort in the chest near the heart. The name "heartburn" comes from the location of the discomfort, but the actual problem has nothing to do with the heart, it's all in the digestive system.

Nausea

Some people feel nauseous with acid reflux, or find that they have an acid-like taste in their mouths.

Gas problems

Patients can suffer from increased gas which can lead to belching and feelings of bloating.

Other symptoms

Although the symptoms listed above are the most common symptoms of acid reflux, patients can sometimes experience other symptoms as well. Some people may suffer from an ongoing cough, which can be worse at night when the acid is more likely to rise up the windpipe. An accompanying wheeze can also be a problem.

Sufferers may experience problems caused by the direct effects of the acid as well, such as gum problems or a sort throat. Severe chest pain may also be a problem.

"An estimated 15 million Americans suffer from heartburn every day, but not everyone will need "the purple pill" (Nexium) or another Proton-Pump Inhibitor (PPI) drug to treat it."

"Nexium, one of the most widely-prescribed PPIs is also the most expensive at $240 per month (the cash price you would pay if your insurance did not cover it). Not surprisingly, Nexium was also a top-selling drug in 2008 at a whooping $4.8 billion."
